Welcome to the 2019-2020 School Year

August 2019

Greetings Panther Parents!!!

I want to officially welcome you to the 2019-2020 school year for J.S. Abrams Elementary School!!! I hope you and your family had an enjoyable summer with the opportunity to refresh before the start of this year. I want to thank each of you for getting our scholars registered and ready to learn. I am looking forward to a great partnership with you and our scholars. For some of you, this is your first year as a Panther Parent while others are returning parents. Thank you in advance for your cooperation, participation and support.

We are excited about this new school year where teaching and learning will go forth daily. We will continue with our initiatives from the previous school year as well as implement new ones. One of the new initiatives we will implement as a school district is utilizing the Acellus program and coding lab. All K-5 scholars will use the program for additional instructional support to master unmet standards and skills. All 3-5 scholars will utilize the Acellus lab for coding. This year, Our W.I.N. Intervention time will incorporate enrichment for those scholars performing on or above grade level. We are also mathematizing our school by providing scholars with the opportunity to think through and solve mathematical problems displayed in various areas on campus.

I am eager about serving and supporting each of you as we embark upon another year of growing and learning together. The key to our scholars' success is daily attendance; therefore, it is imperative for them to be here daily, on time and ready to learn. Because attendance is such a vital component of academic success, those scholars who exemplify positive attendance habits, by being here on time and every day, will be recognized and celebrated at the end of each nine week grading period.

I look forward to meeting and working with each of you this school year. I want you to know that it takes ALL of us working together to make J.S. Abrams Elementary School better, stronger and smarter. Our overall goal is to meet our scholars where they are and give them what they need—academically, culturally, socially and emotionally. We have high expectations for our scholars and expect them to Be Respectful, Be Responsible and Be Resourceful.

As we prepare to move forward with our school year, there is some pertinent information I desire to share with you:

Ø  Passengers of buses, cars and vans must be dropped off at the front of the school. Scholars must report to the gym and sit according to their grade levels. Those who wish to have breakfast will be accompanied to the cafeteria by faculty and staff. The remaining scholars will remain in the gym and participate in Homework Assistance Time (H.A.T.) or Drop Everything and Read (D.E.A.R.) until it is time for them to report to their homeroom class.

Ø  Breakfast is served from 7:30 a.m. to 7:55 a.m. so that scholars are in class and ready to learn at 8:00 a.m. If you want your scholars to eat breakfast, please bring them to school on time.

Ø  Our instructional day begins at 8:00 a.m. Before and after school care are not provided for scholars; I  encourage you to drop off by 7:30 a.m. and pick up by 3:15 p.m.

Ø  Scholars arriving after 8:00 a.m. are considered late and must be signed in by an adult.

Ø  Scholars are expected to dress appropriately daily. Please see the BCS dress code on our school's website under the District News heading.

Ø  If you need to meet with your scholar's teacher, schedule a conference during the teacher's planning time.

Ø  Communicate with classroom teachers and the main office regarding the mode of transportation to and from school for scholars. All scholars traveling on the bus must have a signed bus pass from a parent or guardian to give to their respective bus driver. Bus passes are located in the main office.

Ø  Checkout for scholars will take place at 2:00 p.m. In case of an emergency, the principal or designee will allow checkout after 2:00 p.m.

Ø  The afternoon dismissal begins at 2:45 p.m. Please respect our dismissal process. You are not permitted to go to individual classrooms to pick up scholars before or during the afternoon dismissal.

Ø  Scholars will be dismissed from their classrooms when notified; therefore, no one will be allowed to meet and wait for scholars on the front porch or in the school foyer.

Ø  For the safety of all scholars, dismissal is supervised. Bus, car and van riders will be picked up at the front of the school. All bus riders will depart at 2:50 p.m. from the gym. All walkers will be dismissed from their classrooms at 3:00 p.m. Car and van riders will wait in their classrooms until their names are called. We ask that you wait patiently in your cars until your scholars are dismissed from their classrooms. Again, you will not be allowed to wait for scholars on the front porch or in the school foyer.

If I can be of further assistance or provide you with additional information, please do not hesitate to contact me at (205) 432-3101 or email me at arobinson@bessk12.org. Again, welcome and thank you for being a Panther Parent!!!
